about

The rhythms I'm playing on this album are from the Afro Puerto Rican traditional art form called Bomba.
My West African ancestors who were taken to Puerto Rico and enslaved there to cultivate sugar cane, created Bomba using the rhythms from their homelands. They played barriles that they made out of rum barrels, they danced, having the drums follow their movements, and sang songs which told stories about what was happening at the time.
I’m so grateful this healing practice was passed down to me, and that I have an impactful way to tell stories now.

lyrics

Many beautiful people
We’re taken away
To far away places
Now known as South America,
The United States of America,
The Caribbean islands
Like the island of
Puerto Rico
We honor and thank our ancestors
For passing on Bomba
